Mental Health Resources

APS has many mental health resources for students. This page lists student resources that are available onsite at this school and how to access them. If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis or emergency please contact the New Mexico Crisis and Access Line at 988 or emergency services at 911.
College and Career Readiness Counselor
College and Career Readiness Counselors support all high school students through classroom lessons and one-on-one interactions, providing academic, career, and social-emotional counseling to help them create meaningful post-graduation plans. They help students develop the attitudes, knowledge, and skills necessary for success after high school.
Crossroads: High School/Middle School
Crossroads Counseling is a substance use prevention/intervention program led by school counselors with training and experience in the field of substance use/misuse. They may provide the following services: substance use and misuse education, individual brief counseling, family support and connection to community resources, and/or referrals for more intensive services/treatment if needed. Crossroads counselors also facilitate the Parent Involvement Program (PIP), an optional intervention offered to reduce suspension days for students with controlled substance infractions on campus.
Health and Wellness Team
The Health and Wellness Team (HWT) consists of professional school staff who identify and provide interventions for individual students who need support for health, mental health and social and emotional well-being. Any student can be referred to the HWT. Intervention plans are developed for each student based on their identified needs. Please contact the school counselor(s) for more information.
Health Assistant
Health Assistants are a part of the health office team and provide health services to students under the guidance of the school nurse.
Nurse
School Nurses help students achieve academic success and support every student's ability to learn and access the learning environment.
They oversee the administration of necessary medications and treatments students may need during the school day and are available as a valuable resource to families, staff and school members to guide and plan best practices for healthy students.
Peer Helpers
This school has an APS Peer Helper program. APS Peer Helpers and their staff sponsors attend bi-weekly meetings with training focused on suicide prevention and help-seeking skills. Peer Helpers learn to recognize their own limits as helpers, and can be the link that is needed between young people and professional help. Call or text 988 if you or someone you know needs support. Students may contact their school counselor for more information.
Re-Entry After Hospital Stay
Students returning to school from out of school placements such as residential treatment centers and inpatient behavioral health facilities qualify for a re-entry meeting. This meeting is a coordinated effort between parents/guardians and the school. Parents/guardians can request a re-entry meeting by contacting the school nurse or the District Behavioral Health Resource Nurse at 505-855-9844.
School Counselors
School Counselors provide ongoing academic, personal/social and college and career readiness support. Students can seek out their school counselor whenever support is needed. See the School Counseling tab on your school's website for more information.
Social Work
School-based Social Work (SSW) service is considered a Tier III intervention for students who have received data based interventions but continue to demonstrate lagging social/emotional/behavioral skills. SSW provides supportive consultation and/or direct intervention to address social/emotional/behavioral barriers to learning in a Special Education setting to promote student success. School-based Social Work services are available to students with an IEP but do not necessarily address issues which are not affecting a student’s performance in the school setting or limits their access to their academic program.
Suicide Prevention Protocol
Upon notification from student, staff, or parent/guardian, the counselor, nurse, or social worker will meet with the student. During this meeting, the counselor, nurse, or social worker will discuss the student's ideation. A phone call home will be made to discuss referral options.
