Parent Letter 2017-2018

Hello Parents!

Welcome to a new year here at Cibola High School. My name is Jon O'Brien and I will be one of your student's teachers this school year. I would like to tell you a little bit about myself. This is the beginning of my 10th year as an educator in New Mexico. I am a graduate of the University of New Mexico where I had the privilege of being a student athlete playing football for 5 years with the Lobos. I am state certified in the area of Special Education grades K-12 and Regular Education grades K-8. This is my second year teaching at Cibola and I taught elementary special education at Corrales Elementary for 8 years. I am excited to be working with your student/s this year. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me through email or my school extension which can be found on my web cite or the bottom of this letter. To access this, please go to and find my name through the Contact Us tab.

This year, I will be working very closely with Mr. Strohecker and Mrs. Lozoya, the other two teachers who teach in the Social Emotional Support Services Program (formally known as ED). Your student will be receiving a syllabus and program description, which outlines your student’s responsibilities this year for all three of our classes. For my class, each student will need a spiral notebook for each history class they have with me as well as a 1 inch 3 ring binder (this could be for multiple class use) and a pack of index cards. We will be taking notes in our spiral notebook, using our binders to keep track of work in class and writing our vocabulary words on the index cards. We may also use a flash drive to store student work. A large majority of work will be done in my classroom. The only time I will assign homework is if classwork does not get done in the allotted time given in class. In this case, it will be due the following day. If they do not have me the date the makeup assignment is due, they are to deliver it in the morning or any time during the day to receive credit. There may be times where I will have them work on projects at home if we do not have enough time during class.

Again, please contact me if I can help in any way!

Thank you and I look forward to a great school year!

Jon O'Brien
