Physical Education National Standards

NASPE National Standards

Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a

variety of physical activities.

Provide opportunities for self, peer and teacher assessment of these skills have been incorporated into the curriculum. Developing these skills will help to build a foundation for participation in other physical activities.

Standard 2: Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies and tactics as

they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.

Combine opportunities for students to perform the necessary skills to participate in an activity and a clear

understanding of the principles behind the activity. This increases the likelihood that they will understand the value and importance of the activity.

Standard 3: Participates regularly in physical activity.

The ultimate goal is for students to participate in regular physical activity outside of physical education.

Include technology, including heart rate monitors and pedometers (step counters), so students can monitor their level of participation in physical activity.

Standard 4: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.

Include fitness based activities in the classroom designed to incorporate total body fitness, including the five health-related components of physical fitness.

Standard 5: Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in

physical activity settings.

Provide opportunities for students to work with peers or in small group settings

to accomplish a task. Through these interactions, students will develop an appreciation of the

diversity others may bring to the physical activity setting, as well as tolerance for different types of

people.

Standard 6: Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/or social

interaction.
